Mohegan Sun Online Casino New Jersey Review: $1000 Deposit Match The Mohegan Sun Casino online is the sister site of Resorts Online. From 2015, Mohegan Sun has operated its online casino platform, starting with New Jersey. It has since expanded to other legal online gambling states, such as Pennsylvania. Mohegan Sun Casino Review If you’re new to the New Jersey online gaming landscape, you might be surprised to see Mohegan Sun listed among the options here. Mohegan Sun Casino launched in the New Jersey online casino market in July 2015, only a few months after its sister site Resorts Casino debuted in February of that year. As you may guess from the latter brand, both casinos are under the management of Resorts in Atlantic City.

The best part is the Mohegan Sun online casino bonus, which regular casinos don’t hand out their clients. Especially the welcome bonus, with the matching deposit and free $20 added, along with the low rate of rollover needed, of only 20 times for the main part and mere 5 times for the 20 USD. Summary:

Mohegan Sun has been adding games faster than anyone else in the market, except their sister casino Resorts. The result is a dramatically improved selection in all three key areas: slots, tables, and video poker. The straightforward loyalty program is also a welcome feature. With the huge inventory of games, this one is an easy thumbs up.

Mohegan Sun began in 1996 with the opening of a land-based casino in Connecticut, managed by the Mohegan tribe of Native Americans. The brand expanded in 2006 when the tribe opened Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania. A 2012 agreement to manage Resorts Casino in Atlantic City eventually led to the creation of the tribe’s two online casinos in NJ, Mohegan Sun and Resorts Casino. In this review, I will focus only on the first, Mohegan Sun.Mohegan

Slots, Slots, and More Slots

With a relentless pace of game additions, Mohegan Sun and Resorts have joined Golden Nugget as the only online casinos in NJ to have more than 300 different slot titles available. That’s a staggering number, and it is still climbing on a weekly basis. (Just to be clear, the game numbers in the box above are updated daily.)

Mohegan Sun’s stable of games includes titles from a dozen different developers, including NextGen Gaming, NetEnt, IGT, High 5 Games, and Aristocrat. I picked out a handful of slots that were new to me to showcase here.

One of the first games I checked out was Spiñata Grande, an animal piñata themed game from NetEnt.

This game features “Colossal Symbols”, which are 2×2 or 3×3 blocks of the same symbol. During the free spins bonus round, a 3×3 Colossal Wild block can appear.

I found almost all of the NextGen games to be fun. This one is Foxin’ Wins.
The animation that happens away from the reels is the real star of this game, keeping it interesting.

Among the High 5 Games that are present at Mohegan Sun, here was one that I had not encountered before: Pearl Bay, featuring locking wilds and increasing multipliers in the bonus round.

Video Poker – Most Improved

Video poker has been a common weak point in the NJ market, and I am thrilled to say things are much improved. At Mohegan Sun, when I did the review last year, they offered only six versions of VP. What a difference a year has made! The video poker game count is now up to a very respectable 18 games! That’s not tops in NJ, but it’s awfully close.

The IGT games are still the best in class, with the usual favorites available: Jacks or Better (99.54%), Bonus Poker (99.17%), Double Bonus Poker (99.11%), and Double Double Bonus Poker (98.98%).

Table Games – Lots of Duplicates

Mohegan has added only three new table game choices over the last year. With a total of 17 table games, it doesn’t sound bad until you look at the specifics. There are 8 versions of blackjack, and 6 versions of roulette, which doesn’t leave room for much else. The remaining three games are Three Card Poker, Let It Ride, and Baccarat. Despite the relatively high number of games, this is just an average offering.

Note that the baccarat game is a no-commission version, which increases the house edge on the banker bet to an unacceptably high 4%. If you play it, stick to the player bet.

For roulette, the straightforward “European Roulette” by NYX Gaming is a simple single-zero wheel with a decent user interface for betting.

Some of the available blackjack versions:

  • Atlantic City Blackjack (NextGen): 8 decks, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, Late Surrender. A very reasonable house edge of only 0.41%.
  • Blackjack (IGT): 6 decks, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split up to two times, Double any 2 cards, Double after split allowed, No surrender. The same house edge, at 0.41%.
  • Vegas Blackjack (NYX): 4 decks, multiple hands, Blackjack pays 3:2, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, No Surrender. House edge is 0.40%.
  • Micro Limit Blackjack (NYX): 8 decks, multiple hands, Blackjack pays 6:5, except suited Blackjack pays 2:1, Dealer stands on all 17s, Split once, Double any 2 cards, Double after Split allowed, No Surrender, Rehit split aces, 777 pays 3:1, and 5+ card 21 pays 2:1. Despite the 6:5 payoff on BJ, all the odd additions bring the house edge back down to 0.38%. It will be a volatile game though, because of the extra payouts on more rare hands.

It is surprising that these games with quite different rules all have almost the same theoretical hold. While none of the games are remarkably good, they are all reasonably competitive for the market.

The Atlantic City Blackjack version is an attractive implementation, and gameplay is easy. It’s actually my favorite here.

Mohegan Sun First Deposit Bonus

The signup offer at Mohegan Sun is a big one, but like most of the deposit offers in NJ it comes with stiff wagering requirements. They will match your first deposit, up to $1000 in bonus play. To claim the bonus, follow the instructions on the casino website.

The bonus is based on your initial deposit. If you deposit $50, your deposit will be matched with another $50. If you deposit $1000, you get an extra $1000. But please make sure you understand the wagering requirements before you go for that big bonus. Once the bonus money is in your account, you will need to meet the wagering requirements before withdrawing, unless you cancel the bonus and any winnings derived from it.

To meet the bonus requirements, if you play slots you must wager the bonus amount 20X. If you play video poker or table games, the required wagering is 100X the bonus. That is a lot of play you must survive before you can withdraw a profit from the bonus. But if you plan to play a lot already, this is a great way to improve your chances with free extra money. On the other hand, if you prefer to hit and run with shorter amounts of play, accepting the bonus might not be a good idea for you.

As always, bonus rules can and do change all the time. Be sure to check the website for the current details.

Loyalty Program

Mohegan Sun has a very good loyalty system. Actually, it has two of them. If you already have a player card at Mohegan’s land-based casinos, you can connect your “Momentum Card” account to the online casino, and automatically earn Momentum Dollars to use in the land-based casinos as you play online.

In addition, the online casino has its own rewards system. As you play, you earn “Gems” which allow you to advance through the six different tier levels of the program. At the moment, you can automatically get upgraded to their third level “Amethyst” just by showing you have an account at another of the NJ online casinos. See the site for details.

Gems can be cashed in for free play at various rates depending on your tier. At the higher levels, the cashback can amount to a fairly substantial sum by today’s standards. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on what it takes to advance through the tiers, especially if you find that you are near the next level before cashing in.

Final Thoughts, and a Personal Story

Mohegan Sun is unquestionably a great addition to the NJ market for slot players. And now, with the improvement in video poker offerings they are very competitive in that area as well. However, for table game players, it lands in the middle of the pack due to the unimaginative slate of games. In my opinion, they get extra consideration for having a useful and simple loyalty program. This is an area where many of their competitors could learn a lot from Mohegan.

The Mohegan brand has special memories for me personally, as my first visit to their Connecticut property came in a dramatic fashion. I was picked up at the Providence RI airport in a limo, along with several other notable members of the blackjack community, many of whom I had never met in person before. The occasion was the premiere season of GSN’s World Series of Blackjack, where I was among the 25 notable names in blackjack who were invited to compete for the title of World Blackjack Champion. I won my first televised table, but my luck fell short at the final table where I finished in fifth place. Despite not being crowned the champ, the event was an amazing experience, giving me the opportunity to meet and compete against longtime idols of mine like Micky Rosa, Mike Aponte, James Grosjean, and Stanford Wong.

What does all that have to do with Mohegan’s online casino in New Jersey? Not a thing, of course. But I treasure the memories I have from the first World Series of Blackjack.

I hope you are able to generate some memories of your own at Mohegan Sun.
